Living near a "choice" intersection, I realized that sometimes the line to turn left at a particular light is pretty long. Like 2 miles long. (I measured it using a landmark).
If we know that the biggest baddest longest Lincolns ever made were about 21 feet long, then assuming the cars were stopped, it's pretty safe to assume that every car would fit inside a 30 ft bubble ( big trucks not allowed on this road). If you gave 30 ft to each car, over the 2 miles, there would be 352 cars waiting to turn left when the line is at the max.
WOW! About 20 cars get through each lead light, so that is 18 light cycles approximately.
*note earlier in a comment I said the ,ine was 2.5 miles long, I am not sure if I had ever seen quite THAT long, but I have definitely seen it at the two mile mark.
Dear traffic engineers: 352 cars is too long a line. Please fix.

Flashing yellow. It's finally catching on here in Portland and it helps immensely. If that doesn't fix it, then build a roundabout (I know, in North America! That's crazy-talk..) If they won't do that and traffic is still terrible, then don't let them turn there at that intersection.

So it would just be a flashing yellow for the lefts and a flashing red for the straight through coming against?

No it would be green for the traffic coming against it. The flashing yellow allows the driver who is trying to turn left to turn when the light would normally be red, assuming there is a big enough gap in oncoming traffic, of course! :)

Oh dear. There is usually isn't many gaps. The light cycle goes Lead light for left turns, (about 20-22 cars get through turning left) then green for both directions at once where left turn yields to straight.

How long does that take, this looks like a decent alternative if its too bad... And if heading south...

Can take about 45 minutes. Sometimes you just get stuck on there. I don't think many people know of your alternative, because the roads through that neighbourhood are confusing as all hell. Most traffic heads south.

LOL, I always use back / side streets in busy areas with backup left handers. Actually I avoid lefts 99% of the time...
